It’s funny when you consider the power of motivation. I, by nature am not much of a self-motivated person. I need something to push me to do things, be it a deadline or sense of urgency, the need to take care of responsibilities. A lot of people are like this. Others are motivated by the next piece of the puzzle; they are involved in an ongoing process and they have to see what comes next. Some people are driven by the fear of being idle; they always have to have something to do or else it drives them mad. Some like to see themselves achieving success; others revel in defeating others or challenges in some type of competition. What drives you is often one of the most important components to your entire being. If X drives you, and X is not around, it’s hard to replace it and therefore it’s hard to push yourself onward.

Fortunately, we’re hitting a cycle where we don’t have to manufacture X; it should be floating around everywhere, reminding us that to remain stagnant is in itself a form of loss. As you go about your business, keep this in mind. What are you doing to improve?

I’ll end with a tale from the golf course. Yesterday, I’m randomly playing with a guy who knew my uncle from the neighborhood, Joe. Joe’s been playing for a year, but he’s not terrible (most of the people that play at the local course range between awful and God awful). He holds his own. I start the round playing about as bad as I can, but as I shake the rust off, I get a little better. Joe keeps reaffirming to me, “Improvement. Got to keep making improvement.” That’s when I saw my golf game as a microcosm for what a lot of people are doing out there. So often, people do the same things over and over again, assuming that the mere act of doing them repeatedly will make them better. This is not the case. You have to look for ways to make things better and enact those changes. Merely repeating your subpar efforts over and over again will make you really good at being subpar. So look for the ways to make improvement and know that you’re going to have something pushing you to get over the hump in close proximity. Best of luck.

In the back of your mind, you’re probably thinking of all the upcoming responsibilities you’ll have to handle in the coming weeks.
