The significance of the Winter Solstice to our ancestors was probably because it marked the lengthening of days, which was regarded as a time of rebirth.
Because of its importance, there are simply too many Winter Solstice celebrations and festivals to list. We all know about Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa. But here are a couple more you may never have heard of!
The Scandinavian Winter Solstice festival of the Feast of Juul involved the burning of Juul logs to symbolize the returning of the sun, giving rise to the Christmas tradition of Yule Logs. There is a Finnish myth about Louhi, a powerful and evil witch that ruled the mythical northern realm of Pohjola. In the myth, Louhi steals the sun and the moon away, holding them captive inside a mountain, causing the waning daylight leading up to the Winter Solstice.
Celebrating the lengthening and shortening of daylight is as old as mankind. All of the celebrations involve Light and the Sun or Son. Candles and fires were lit, and now homes are decorated with electric lights of all colors both inside and out.
Celebrate the return of the light in a way that makes you feel good! Whether it is with friends, family or alone. There is always a reason to celebrate and something to be thankful for!
