Back to school season is on high. Many of us have been out of the classroom for quite some time. But as the saying goes, “we’re never too old to learn something new.” This theme resonates in today’s ‘scopes. Earlier we focused on learning about our inner selves, our subconscious. This time around we are going to focus on our surroundings and the external environment. We’re going to focus on becoming a “student of life” all over again.

Most of us live fairly sedentary lives. We reside and travel within a specific square mileage and all of our comforts are within reaching distance. We never really make an effort to leave because we never see the need to. The easy and safe environment of our humble abode is all that we ever shall need.

If you do travel a lot (on business), you probably don’t have time (or don’t make time) to truly experience the location you’re doing business in. You spend most of your time in the safe and secure hotel room, with room service! You make your way to the airport, arrive in the city, attend your appointments, hop back on a plane, and then make your way home (or to the next city) to repeat the same program.

The act of learning involves breaking this cycle of “safety.” It’s about forcing you out of your comfort zone and revisiting that sense of wonder and naïveté. It’s about becoming a child again and viewing the world from the vantage point of forty-eight inches. Each and every one of us has the ability and liberty to do this. But most of us do not attempt to because ultimately breaking the habit of “having every need and want taken care of” takes work. Taking away the comforts would offer discomfort – and who would want to be uncomfortable? Overall, learning takes work and discomfort.

If you are able to blend that special combination of unfamiliarity, vulnerability, and awakening, then you are able to re-enter this magical world at any time you desire. This power is important. The worldliest people are the ones that have no sense of “real safety” and view the world as a living breathing classroom. The innovative, forward thinking, progressive leaders in this world, are the ones that aren’t afraid of “looking stupid” or “asking questions” and “daring to be wrong.” They have no problem tearing off the robes and running around the house naked. There’s no judgment and no fear of being judged. Make it your mission this week to become “childlike” again. See where it takes you and while you’re at it, learn as much as you can.

You’re revving to get back to work. But you still have a lot of “downtime” leftover on your personal punch clock. It would be best to blend the energies by working on your personal pet projects. See if you can get those underway and hopefully completed before you head back to the real work that pays the bills. Who knows? Personal work will eventually lead to bringing home the bacon. Use this extra downtime wisely.
